Dear Mommy

If I knew then as a child, that the PAIN from combing my natural hair would bring forth BEAUTY, I would have cried a million more beautiful tears.

“It’s ok, Mimi, it’s ok, Mimi”, she would say soothingly, as she tried to pry my fingers away from their tight grip on my strands. I had been crying for fifteen minutes now since she began combing my coarse, coiled 4c hair. Every day, the yard would be filled with groans and screams as I anguished in the pain that came with every tug.

My mom tried her best to gently pass the comb through, diligently unknotting, detangling and platting my hair. I wasn’t making it any easier though, each time I grabbed onto my strands in hope that she would just stop. That did not work because after all, I had to get groomed to arrive at school on time

I can still smell the heavy, woody scented aroma of yellow grease and castor oil which she always bought at the market. She was a market vendor, and she ensured that her mixture, never run out. She used it to lovingly comb her eight (8) daughters, who all had 4c hair of varying density and lengths.

One dreary day in November, my beautiful mom passed on. At the tender age of eleven (11), I was left in the hands of my elder siblings who at the time were not much older than I was, the eldest herself, still a teenager. They could never have taken the place of my mom. I terribly missed her soothing words, “It’s ok Mimi” and patience which she had when washing and styling my hair. My pain had gotten worse.

I was forced to begin caring for and managing my hair soon after, which was a task I hated doing. Regardless of my pain though, my love for everything natural, coupled with my religious beliefs, enabled me to keep my hair in its natural state into adulthood. I was determined to alleviate the pain which I always felt whenever I combed, in particular, after washing. Hence, I went on a quest to develop products that would in particular, detangle and moisturize my 4c hair.

This is how my natural hair products company, Black & Daring was birthed.

Through years of my own personal experience and being the Founder of my natural hair products line, I began prioritizing education. I embarked on my Clinical Trichology training to get an Indepth knowledge of the diseases of the hair/scalp and its treatments.

I’ve learned the importance of understanding and loving the unique beauty of natural 4c hair.

Now, I’m here to share that journey with you.
